Liverpool F.C. will need to start considering the future of their goalkeeper position soon, with Alisson's contract set to expire in 2026-27. The Brazilian goalkeeper has been the first choice since July 2018, but his time at Anfield is coming to an end. Despite widespread talk of an exit this summer, Alisson is expected to stay for the final year of his contract. When he does decide to leave, he will depart as a club legend and Liverpool's most talented goalkeeper of the Premier League era. Filling his gloves will be a tough test for Liverpool F.C. As the club looks to the future, they have two goalkeepers to consider: Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman. Mamardashvili, a 25-year-old Georgian, arrived from Valencia two years ago as a long-term investment. He was expected to be the natural successor to Alisson, but his debut season was marked by adaptation to English football. In 20 appearances across all competitions, Mamardashvili finished on the winning team just six times and fell short in several areas. He did not appear to command the same level of authority in goal and his kicking was a weakness. Unlike Alisson, who is a strong right-footed kicker, Mamardashvili was more accurate and consistent with his left peg. However, he was not always able to use it in open-play distribution. The majority of his passes (54 per cent) went to the right, whereas Alisson kicked to the left 60 per cent of the time. Mamardashvili is now waiting to hear what new head coach Andoni Iraola has in store for him. He almost moved to Iraola's previous club Bournemouth on loan in summer 2024, but was instead loaned back to Valencia for that season. Freddie Woodman, Liverpool's third-choice goalkeeper, has also been called upon in key matches due to Alisson's injuries. The club will need to assess the strengths and weaknesses of both goalkeepers to determine who is best suited to take over from Alisson.
