Conor Coady, the former Liverpool academy graduate and England international, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33. The defender, who has been without a club since his contract was terminated in August, will now begin a coaching career with the England Under-21s. His retirement comes as his first club, Liverpool, handles a challenging season, sitting 5th in the Premier League with 15 points from nine games, a record of four wins, three draws and two defeats.
Coady made just two senior appearances for Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers but went on to forge a distinguished career across eight clubs. His most significant spell came at Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he made 317 appearances and captained the side to promotion back to the Premier League. He also played for Everton, Leicester City, and had loan spells at Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, Wrexham, and Charlton Athletic, amassing 503 career appearances and two promotions.
Internationally, the St Helens-born defender won 10 senior caps under Gareth Southgate between 2020 and 2022, featuring in the Euro 2020 squad. He did not play at the 2022 World Cup. Coady joined Lee Carsley's England Under-21s coaching staff in September, having previously worked with the Under-19s, and is also being linked with an assistant head coach role at League One side Barnsley.
In a retirement statement, Coady expressed his gratitude. "But it’s time for my incredible wife Amie, and four boys, to enjoy seeing daddy a little bit more," he said. He also thanked fans from every club, adding, "Thank you for everything.
His retirement news arrives as Liverpool, the club where his career began, handle a tight Premier League title race. The Reds currently sit 5th in the standings with 15 points from nine games, nine points behind leaders Arsenal. Their recent form has been mixed, with two wins, a draw, and two defeats in their last five outings, including a 3-2 loss to Fenerbahçe last time out. That defeat on Wednesday 4 November saw goals from Treymaurice Nyoni and Alexander Isak, who is the club's top scorer this season with six goals, but it was not enough to avoid a second consecutive loss following a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal. The team has scored 11 goals and conceded nine so far this campaign. They face Crystal Palace away next on Sunday 8 November as they look to close the gap at the top. Coady's move into coaching with the national team setup marks the next chapter for a player who represented his country at the highest level.
