Liverpool F.C. Have seen two more members of their recruitment staff depart for Al Hilal, following former sporting director Richard Hughes to the Saudi Pro League club. Mark Burchill and Craig McKee, who both arrived at Anfield with Hughes from Bournemouth two years ago, have now joined him in Saudi Arabia.
This news comes as Liverpool sit sixth in the Premier League table with five points from their opening three matches. Their record stands at one win and two draws, with a goal difference of plus two after scoring six and conceding four. Arne Slot's side are currently four points behind early leaders Manchester City.
Mark Burchill served as Liverpool's chief scout after moving from Bournemouth in March 2024. He had previously held the same role at the Vitality Stadium. Craig McKee was appointed as Liverpool's head of scouting operations, having been Bournemouth's recruitment coordinator before his switch to Merseyside. Both men were part of the recruitment team assembled by Richard Hughes, who was appointed Liverpool's sporting director in March 2024.
Hughes' first major task was to identify a successor for Jurgen Klopp. He played a central role in selecting Arne Slot, who went on to guide Liverpool to the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season. During Hughes' two-and-a-half year tenure, the club invested approximately £700 million on new signings. Key arrivals included Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Jeremy Jacquet and Milos Kerkez.
Liverpool announced Hughes' departure on Saturday, after he completed his duties overseeing the recent summer transfer window. Senior figures at Fenway Sports Group have insisted there was no concern over his commitment during that period. The club are expected to consider internal candidates for his replacement.
Contenders include Julian Ward, the technical director of Fenway Sports Group, current assistant sporting director David Woodfine, and Pedro Marques, FSG's director of football development. Liverpool believe their existing structure is strong and expect to announce a successor as quickly as possible.
Richard Hughes came to Liverpool because of his long-standing relationship with Michael Edwards. The pair worked together at Portsmouth, where Hughes was a player and Edwards an analyst. Edwards informed FSG of his decision to move on late last year. Hughes said upon his departure, "It has been a source of great pride to have been given the opportunity to serve this incredible and unique institution."
The exits of Burchill and McKee follow the earlier departure of Dave Fallows to Chelsea during their time at Anfield. Barry Hunter remains as Liverpool's chief scout, a role he has held for 14 years. Hunter and Fallows were responsible for much of the club's recruitment success between 2016 and 2018 under Klopp.
Attention now turns to the pitch and the immediate challenge of closing the gap to Manchester City. Liverpool's next opportunity comes on September 12th when they host Fulham at Anfield.
