According to transfer expert Nicolò Schira, Gakpo has agreed personal terms on a contract lasting until 2031, with Tottenham now working to reach an agreement with Liverpool on the transfer fee as soon as possible. This news follows Schira's exclusive from June, when he first revealed Gakpo's status as a top target for Roberto De Zerbi.
It is quite obvious why Tottenham want to sign Cody Gakpo. Their attacking department is very light, and Gakpo is a Premier League-proven, in fact, Premier League-winning, goal-scorer. But is the deal in Liverpool's own interest? As it stands, the answer is no. Without any incomings, selling Gakpo would leave the Reds short in attack. Also, he is the only current member of the Reds' squad who represents proven cover for the centre-forward position - which is important when Alexander Isak is the only natural option in the position whilst we await Hugo Ekitike's return from injury.
However, if things are as they appear and a move to Tottenham is progressing for Gakpo, perhaps that suggests Liverpool's own transfer business is also moving forward. The Reds' much-publicised pursuit of Bradley Barcola could be about to end, and this might give Liverpool enough confidence in their attacking department to choose to cash in on the Dutch forward.

Gakpo has never quite secured a nailed-on starting berth at Liverpool, despite being an important member of the squad for many years now. It is not surprising that he would be intrigued by the prospect of becoming one of the first names on the team sheet at Tottenham, especially with the exciting transfer business they have already completed this summer. For Liverpool, if successful in their pursuit of Barcola, the left wing department will almost be overstocked. The immense quality of both Barcola and Rio Ngumoha could threaten to push Gakpo further down the pecking order. The harsh reality is, he may quickly become surplus to requirements if he stays at Liverpool. The only caveat that remains is for Liverpool to ensure his replacement is already through the door before cashing in.
