Former Liverpool player Luis Garcia has opened up about his lasting regret over missing the 2005 FA Cup final, while explaining his decision to leave the club for Atletico Madrid in 2007. The Spaniard, now 48, discussed his Anfield career in an interview this week, as Liverpool prepared to host Atletico in the Champions League league phase on September 9.
Garcia spent three great years with Liverpool from 2004 to 2007, making 122 appearances and scoring several important goals. He was a key part of the side that won the Champions League in Istanbul in 2005 and the FA Cup the following year. His time at the club, however, ended with a transfer back to Spain. "I could have stayed or I could return to Spain," Garcia said. "I have made a decision which I believe is the right one."
Despite the success, Garcia's biggest personal regret is clear. "We won the Champions League and later the FA Cup, unfortunately I missed the final, which is something that I still regret," he stated. He was suspended for the 2006 final against West Ham United after receiving a red card in a league match against the same opponent for elbowing Hayden Mullins. Garcia recalled in 2023 that getting sent off in the build-up was a big mistake. Steven Gerrard's famous brace secured the cup in his absence.
Garcia scored in the FA Cup semi-final win over Chelsea in 2005 and was key in the European run, netting in three knockout rounds including a decisive semi-final goal against Chelsea. He often refers to that semi-final strike when talking to young kids about his career. The forward expressed deep gratitude for the Liverpool fans, who supported him from his arrival through good and bad times. He said he tried to repay the club's trust but could never fully repay their unconditional support.
The reflection comes as the current Liverpool side, managed by Andoni Iraola, aims for a seventh Champions League title. Their domestic form this season sees them sixth in the Premier League with 5 points from three games, following a win and two draws. They have scored 6 goals and conceded 4, leaving them with a +2 goal difference and four points behind leaders Manchester City. Fans can track the team's progress in the standings.
Before joining Liverpool, Garcia had already played for Atletico Madrid in the 2002/03 season and had a stint with Barcelona. His return to Atletico in 2007 concluded his Liverpool chapter. The two clubs met again in a Champions League group stage match this season. Atletico Madrid had not won the Champions League at the time.
Liverpool's next challenge is an away trip to face Sunderland on January 6, 2027. Sunderland currently sit 12th in the table. The full schedule of upcoming matches is available on the club's fixtures page. Garcia's story is a reminder of the fine margins in a footballer's career, where legendary triumphs and personal disappointment can exist side by side. The club continues its pursuit of honours from a position in the top half of the league.
